Kettle Corn and Whirley-Pop

Kettle Corn…Yum!  Was browsing on-line and found a couple of blogs that inspired me to give a shout out to see if anyone had a Whirley-Pop that I could borrow.  Whoo hoo for the in-laws!  My sis-in-law dropped it off the next morning.  I made some kettle corn right away.  Then, after some inspiration from Chica and Jo’s BLOG, I added melted chocolate and red sugar.  So pretty.  Soooo yummy.  Been making new batches all day!

INGREDIENTS:

  • Whirley-Pop
  • 1/4 Cup Pop Corn (I used Jolly Time Yellow Corn)
  • 3 Tablespoons Canola Corn Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • Salt
  • Melted Chocolate optional
  • Colored Sugar optional

STEP 1:
I suggest you read through these steps before beginning because you have to work pretty quick and once you start turning the crank on the Whirley-pot, you won’t have time to stop and look over these directions again.  Borrow Whirley-Pop from your in-laws.  I’ve seen them on target.com and amazon.com, Walmart.com, etc if your in-laws don’t have one.  =D Get all of your supplies set out and ingredients measured.

STEP 2:
Pour in 3 Tablespoons of Canola Corn Oil into cooled pot.

Pour in 1/4 cup popcorn kernals into the cool pot.  Turn stove on Med-High heat.  I set mine closer to High.

kettlecorn 032STEP:  4
As soon as you turn the stove on, begin to turn the crank slowly. You know, the whole, “1 Mississippi” per full rotation. As soon as you hear the popcorn start to pop, QUICKLY open the lid and pour in 1/4 cup of sugar.  I learned on the first try that the popcorn will shoot right out of the popper if you keep the lid open too long.  Here is me trying to take a picture and pour sugar at the same time.  I spilled it all over the stove.  LOL

kettlecorn 034STEP 5: Start turning the crank faster now.  3 full rotations per 1 Mississippi. Now that you’ve put the sugar in, it’s going to have to warm up before it starts popping again. Once it gets to the “peak” of popping, remove from the heat, but keep cranking.

STEP 6: Pour into large bowl and sprinkle salt to taste. This is amazing just like this.  But you don’t have to stop there.  See step 7 for another variation.

STEP 7: Pour out kettle corn onto waxed paper or parchment paper.  Drizzle with melted chocolate candies and sprinkle with colored sugar.  Allow to cool completely before putting it into a ziplock bag.  Should keep fresh for a couple of days…if it lasts that long.

kettlecorn 025Seriously takes less than 10 min 5 min, start to finish, and that includes gathering your supplies.  Happy Day!

If you have time, remember to check out the original posts from Chica and Jo’s Website!  Their recipe was the first one I tried and it was PERFECT the first time I made it!

Jacob Cup

I found this sippy cup at Target.  Can’t find them anymore.  You’re supposed to design your own cup.  I embroidered this insert with my nephew’s name on it.  I put it back into the package and sealed it up to make it look more “professional” when he opened it.  Forgot to take a picture before putting it back into the package so it’s kind of hard to see.  He got this as a gift back in 2007.
Thanks for looking.  :)

Lexi’s 13th Birthday

I almost forgot to show you guys pictures of Lexi’s birthday cake that I made. This was her first boy/girl party.  They kids were awesome!  No drama and everyone got along.  They went on a scavenger hunt, sat by the fire outside, ate hamburgers and hotdogs.  Roasted marshmallows and ate s’mores.  Guys went home and the girls watched scary movies and stayed up late chatting.  So fun!  Thanks for looking!003I made this in such a hurry at the very last minute.  In fact, I was wiping down the counters when the first guest arrived.  I meant to put the ribbon on the top cake and the black fondant ribbon on the middle cake.  Oh well.  The top layer was made from scratch boxed!  Gah!  I know.  It was a confetti mix.  The second layer was made from scratch bought from the bakery.  It was this awesome looking chocolate cake that I scraped all the extra fudgy stuff off of and left the frosting for my dirty frosting under the fondant.  The bottom layer was made from scratch boxed.  Yikes…I can hear it now.  Yes, it was a couple of boxes of vanilla.  Something for everyone.  The jr. highers were so cute, they all grabbed their cell phones and took pictures to send to their parents.  (EVEN THE BOYS!)  How sweet, huh?  Well, you know how jr. high girls are…they share a piece of rice and they’re full.  Gave some of the cake away and still ended up doing this…

008Yes, that would be the cake in the garbage.  1 piece of the top cake, 1/2 of the middle cake, and most of the bottom cake.  :(  I need to make smaller cakes.
