I’m very proud of this project. Typically I get ideas from other crafters, magazines, shopping, etc. But I actually thought of this project all by myself! :D Yay me! My little nephew was having his 4th birthday and he loves LEGOS. I was picturing in my mind him playing with his legos and thought, “he needs to have his own little table”. Not one of those big play tables or anything, but something that could be put away when not in use. Then, I saw this:
I went to Toys R Us and got 3 of these.
They were 10″ x 10 ” and the table was 19 3/4″ x 12. The cashier was so sweet to find someone in back to bring up a measuring tape since the size wasn’t written on the package. To get them to fit, I used my Exacto Knife and Straight Edge and just scored it on both sides of the mat until it broke off. One of the edges was a bit wonky so I used my Medium Grit Sanding Block and sanded it a tad. Perfect!
I spray painted the table with black spray paint.
And while I was out there with the drop cloth and paint, I went ahead and painted this picture frame from my garage sale hunting yesterday. :)
After the table was dry, I glued the Lego mats on using E6000. Love that stuff, despite the smell.
I sewed the little pouches to hold some of his legos while he plays. I just cut out 8″ x 8″ squares, embroidered his name using Silver thread, and lined them. I attached a 6″ piece of velcro to the bag and then glued the other side to the side of the table. Once again, using my E6000.
Yesterday I bought a Cricut Expression!! Whoo Hoo! I made a stencil with his name and used that to paint his name on the front. Don’t even ask me how I did that. It was a mess, a pain, sloppy… I think using contact paper for the stencil would have been a much better choice.
Well that’s it! His mom loved it. Sometimes, that’s all that matters.
I almost forgot to mention: I purchased him this box of Lego Bionics or whatever they were called. And, after gluing the mats to the top, I needed some legos to make sure they were lined up properly. So I actually opened the can of legos that I bought him and realized that these things don’t even look like legos. They snap together and stuff, but they didn’t help me. I ended up just “eye-balling” them and taping them so they wouldn’t move when the glue expanded. Also put 2 of my daughter’s textbooks on the top while it dried overnight.
