I Love My Uncle Ronnie

uncleronnie

Little Riley goes over to our Aunt Sara and Uncle Ronnie’s house while we are at work. They are FABULOUS with kids and we are lucky to have them! Uncle Ronnie says it’s his job to play with Riley when he comes home from work. He sits down and builds things with her and plays with her! She loves him! (and Aunt Sara) Uncle Ronnie has even watched Riley while Aunt Sara had lunch with some friends. This is for you, Uncle Ronnie, for “taking it for the team”! Love you!

I know these pictures are not fabulous.  I had to throw it in the washing machine to get all of the stabilizer off.  It needs to be ironed.

I made the design using Embird, with Font Engine.  All the fonts are different. The shirt was just a plain tee that I pulled out of her dresser. :)

I loved seeing Aunt Sara’s face when Riley walked up to the door.

A Visit from the Governor’s Wife

img_7533b

[This picture was taken in our front room by her driver.]

In April of 2oo7, while doing foster care, we had a very special visit by the Governor’s Wife.  First Lady Dawn Gibbons came to MY HOUSE! I guess she was asking around about visiting a foster home. She learned that my husband and I were “Shelter Parents of the year for Clark County” and requested a visit. We were contacted the day before and informed that she would be coming. So, I had one day to get these backpacks done. I had gone on-line to research her family and discovered that she had 3 little grandchildren.  Since I make these little backpacks for all of our foster children, I thought it would be appropriate to make them for her grands.  It’s just a little taste of what the kids experience while in our home. :) All of our kids got a backpack/tote bag and a photo album of their stay while they were in our home.

She met our kids, toured our home and was very appreciative of the backpacks. She then invited our entire family to come and spend the night at the Governor’s mansion in Carson City and gave me the contact info.  (At the time, we were living in Las Vegas.) My daughter just happened to have a field trip coming up 2 weeks later to Carson City.  While we were unable to take the whole family to spend the night, we were able to get my daughter’s class in for a tour of the Governor’s mansion.  (Not an easy task so last minute.)

Soon after the First Lady stopped by, we received this package in the mail with a nice note from her.  =)  Thank you First Lady Gibbons! img_7542b

I am truly blessed that she took the time out of her busy schedule to visit us. OH BY THE WAY…when we toured the mansion we saw the backpacks hanging on the wall under the stairs.  She always has a special item for the kids when they come to visit and now they go straight to their backpacks hanging on the wall to find it when they arrive.  :D

I was so sad to learn that the Governor and First Lady are no longer married. I still think of the First Lady fondly. I wish her well in all that she does.

Baby Shower Gifts

It was a girl!  This was a set I did for my really good friend.  Her baby is not so much a baby anymore.  :)  This was made to match her bedding. Since the shower was for Mommy and Daddy, I decided to make some bibs that I knew Dad would get a kick out of.  He plays an on-line pvp game and the quotes all have something to do with it.  (W.O.W.)

Here is where you can find the FREE Pattern for the Tag Ball and Tag Blanket. I have made tons of these!

Gift for Tatiana

img_7566

A few years ago, one of our Foster children needed a gift to take to a birthday party.  The Birthday girl’s name was Tatiana.  This is what I made to take to her party.

  • I purchased the Pink Tote bag at Walmart and embroidered her name on it. img_7563
  • I embroidered her name and embroidered this flip-flop applique on a towel for her. img_7564
  • I embroidered her name on a ribbon and sewed it to an o ring.  I picked up the O rings at Home Depot. They come in a box and are in the garden section.  Then I slipped that over a water bottle. img_7565

I chose this beach theme because we were living in Las Vegas and it is so hot during the summer time.  Most of the kids spend the long hot summer days swimming. :)  Birthday girl loved it.

Cloche (Yes, I jumped on the bandwagon)

009b

These Cheese Dome/Candlestick turned Cloche are all over the blog world.  I see them everywhere I turn.  But here is the FIRST one that I saw, so I’m calling it my inspiration.

Remember these goodwill finds from here?

Well, I took the feet off the bottom of the cheese dome.  Painted the whole thing black.  Then, I used my Gorilla Super Glue (I was out of the regular stuff.) I taped it up until it dried.

001b

I think it needs another coat of paint.  I usually use a flat black, but looking at my inspirational piece, I think I’ll use a satin or gloss.  What do you think?

010

Oh, and the glass had some packing tape on it and when I was scrubbing it in the sink, I put a crack in it.  Bummer.  But I faced it toward the wall for now. LOL I purchased the green apples at Walmart for $1 a piece.

009b
  • Candle Stick $1.49
  • Cheese Dome $4.99
  • Apples $1 each
  • Spray Paint (already in my stash)

School Uniform Upcycle

img_6611b

My daughter was in private school from preschool – 7th grade.  She always had to wear a uniform.  I loved her in uniforms. I love the idea of uniforms. My daughter, not so much.  Well, she grew quickly and we often had to invest in more uniforms.  In 4th grade she was a cheerleader.  I decided to use her old uniforms and make her a “RAH RAH Bag” to hold her pom poms, water bottle, etc. I ripped the strap and zipper out of an old promo bag that was never used. The blue fabric is a pair of her old uniform pants for school. The red tartan is from one of her old school jumpers. Since I had to rip seams before I could sew them…it took me forever. I went really slow, because this was a huge project for me at the time.  I had never done anything like this before.  There was a little zipper in the back of the jumper. Instead of ripping it out, I cut a rectangle around it and made the little pouch to go in the pocket of her bag. Didn’t have to put the zipper in, it was already done for me. I used a diaper bag pattern. McCall’s 4403

Below is my 1st TLG! I made it out of my daughter’s old school uniforms. The navy blue is out of 2 pairs of pants and the tartan is an old jumper. The red is just some fabric I had in my small stash. It was for my daughter’s Teacher as a Teacher Appreciation gift. There is also a picture of my bag after it’s final stitch. You’ll see there is only a couple of inches of my thread left. Now that’s good timing!

Here is a picture of the fire that was happening about a block away of my home while I was trying to sew this TLG bag.

I made this bag for her 4th grade teacher’s assistant. This is a Smoon Pattern. Oh…BTW…on the straps I used my machines built-in stitches and stitched her name over and over again instead of straight lines on the straps. Took forever.

img_7660b

This is a SMOON Headband. I used material from my DD’s old uniform dress for one side and worn out uniform pants for the other side. I embroidered an eagle on the blue. It closely resembles their school mascot logo. I bought the eagle on-line from…I think…ebroiderydesigns.com. I’m glad I put that $35.00 dress to good use.

Keychain Chapstick Holder

img_7665

Okay, so this is an old project, but I wanted to show you anyway.  :)  These are some chapstick holders that were done entirely in the hoop!  Head on over to Reen’s site at Embroidery Garden!  She has great designs.  Totally practical and fun to do! Don’t ya just love that fringe flower on the flip-flop?  Me too!

Goodwill finds

015

This is what I found at a recent trip to the Goodwill.  (I’ve been on a hunt for another bed tray like THIS one to turn into another LEGO TABLE, but no such luck.)

Okay, here’s the breakdown:

  • Candle Stick $1.49
  • Cheese Dome $4.99
  • Picture thing with dead butterfly (LOL) $1.99
  • Leap Frog Centipede  $2.99

Everything was just a tad more than what I really wanted to pay.  So sad when I think that the Goodwill is too expensive.  :D I’m so frugal!! I have BIG plans for these things, except the toy.  Riley loves her little Leap Frog Centipede. Come on Riley, learn your ABC’s!

Check back to see a transformation!

There you have it.  I bought 2 desk chairs at the Sacramento County Sale.  They were $2 EACH!!!  That is NOT a typo.  I can’t wait to re-cover one of them like the one I did for my Office Cubicle Makeover to go in my Craft Room.  Doin’ the Happy Dance.
