Dominoes Dominoes Dominoes

I’m finally blogging about my awesome DOMINOES!  They turned out so fab!  I need to stop right now and give all the credit to Ashley over at Shanty2chic for the idea and tutorial. They have great ideas over there, so check ‘em out!

This was such a fun project.  They went in our front room.  I want it to look like a chic Board Game room. The first thing I did was gather my supplies.

  • 1 piece of lumber that was 10×6x2 and asked the Home Depot guy to cut it into SIX, 16″ pieces.  He was off a little and now one of them is shorter than the rest.  (Of course I didn’t notice that before sanding them and ended up using it.)
  • Behr Paint in Satin.  I need to go see what color I bought.  I didn’t use the same as Ashley because I wanted it to go with the pillows on my new-to-me couch.
  • Black Americana Acrylic Paint
  • Minwax Stain in Red Mahogany
  • Ralph Lauren Glaze in Smoke
  • Cricut Stencils made out of contact paper

  001-000

First, I sanded 4 of the pieces down.  Every side/edge.  Then worked on those corners to form a domino shape.

003-002

Next, I painted them off-white.  I used a foam rolling brush.  I gave them 2 coats.

006-003

Then, I sanded down the corners and corner edges. I applied a coat of Minwax stain and then wiped the excess off.

007-004 009-006

I jumped on the computer and designed some domino stencils.  I used the cricut and cut them out using contact paper.

010-007

Using my Black Acrylic Paint and sponge brush, I filled in the stencil.  Then, I just pealed off the stencil, let it dry, and sanded.

After roughing everything up, I used the Minwax stain again.  This time all over.  Wipe on/Wipe off.

And then I hung them on my rental home wall.  :(   I can’t paint. /sad   So, just look at the rad dominones and not the ugly wall behind it.  :)

Entry Table

022

After dropping Riley Bug off at Aunt Sara’s house, I saw this poor pathetic table hiding under a bunch of junk at a garage sale. It had this cute little sticker on it’s nose that read “$5″. 003b

“I’ll take it!”  She had it loaded into my van before I even paid her.  :-)

I sanded it all down with my palm sander. Wasn’t in love with the knob that came on it.  I was contemplating whether to go find a pretty crystal looking one. But just you wait and see what I ended up doing. :) 007

Here it is getting a fresh coat of paint.  See that blue tarp?  My sis-in-law loaned it to me like 2 years ago.  I wonder if she knows it’s still missing? ;) 009

I needed a “backdrop” to spray paint the little knob.  So I grabbed this drink holder from Hubby’s trip to In-N-Out.  Mmm.  I just screwed it on and started painting away with my Rust-Oleum, heirloom white, in satin.  Loves it!  I gave it a couple of coats. 013

014

Here it is all done!  I put it in the entry way, near the front door. Please ignore the old old tile and the gross cheap paint.  We’re renting. 025b

Here is my favorite part!  The drawer knob.  After spray painting it, I added a monogram.  I used my new-ish cricut and cut a “B” out of contact paper.  I applied the contact paper to the knob and then just took a SHARPIE to fill it in like a stencil.  I love how it turned out! 024b

Now I don’t know if I should leave it as is.  Or, should I sand it down and shabby it up?  I was thinking that I should just leave it since it has a more contemporary, straight line, look.  What do you think? I know, I know, you’re going to say to sand it and see how I like it and then paint it over if I don’t care for it.  You’re right.  Maybe next weekend.  :) 030

I don’t have anything pretty on it because this is where my purse lands after I come through the garage door.  Guess I should have put some flowers on it for the pictures though.  :/

Cloche (Yes, I jumped on the bandwagon)

009b

These Cheese Dome/Candlestick turned Cloche are all over the blog world.  I see them everywhere I turn.  But here is the FIRST one that I saw, so I’m calling it my inspiration.

Remember these goodwill finds from here?

007 008 009

Well, I took the feet off the bottom of the cheese dome.  Painted the whole thing black.  Then, I used my Gorilla Super Glue (I was out of the regular stuff.) I taped it up until it dried.

001b

I think it needs another coat of paint.  I usually use a flat black, but looking at my inspirational piece, I think I’ll use a satin or gloss.  What do you think?

010

Oh, and the glass had some packing tape on it and when I was scrubbing it in the sink, I put a crack in it.  Bummer.  But I faced it toward the wall for now. LOL I purchased the green apples at Walmart for $1 a piece.

  • Candle Stick $1.49
  • Cheese Dome $4.99
  • Apples $1 each
  • Spray Paint (already in my stash)

Goodwill finds

015

This is what I found at a recent trip to the Goodwill.  (I’ve been on a hunt for another bed tray like THIS one to turn into another LEGO TABLE, but no such luck.)

Okay, here’s the breakdown:

  • Candle Stick $1.49
  • Cheese Dome $4.99
  • Picture thing with dead butterfly (LOL) $1.99
  • Leap Frog Centipede  $2.99

Everything was just a tad more than what I really wanted to pay.  So sad when I think that the Goodwill is too expensive.  :D I’m so frugal!! I have BIG plans for these things, except the toy.  Riley loves her little Leap Frog Centipede. Come on Riley, learn your ABC’s!

Check back to see a transformation!

Runs With Scissors

027
I have always wanted a GIANT pair of scissors as a decoration for my craft room. When I saw these plastic scissors at the 99cent store, I knew I had to have them!! I just gave them a coat of BLACK spray paint in a MATT finish. Then I used my silver SHARPIE to color in the rivet. Then I attached them to the wall with a double sided 3M COMMAND PICTURE HANGING STRIPS. Now I’m going to add some GIANT letters that spell out “CREATE” in the center of the wall. Thanks for looking!

Here is a picture of it when I remembered to take the “before picture”

Ribbon Shelf

Okay, you might remember this shelf from HERE. I painted it a while back since I had the paint out anyway.  I needed a shelf for some of my ribbon.  I still have 1/2 of a bin left that I’m not sure how to store, but at least I can see some of it.

First I painted the old shelf BLACK.  Leaving the WHITE parts White.

039

Then, I had the Home Depot guy cut some dowels for me. Twelve dowels, thirteen inches long. After that, I drilled a hole about 3/8 inches for each dowel on each side of the shelf.

008

Okay, so here’s the tricky part.  Because the dowel is fed through the side of the shelf, I had to feed it through the ribbon and out the other side.

011

I didn’t paint the dowels, actually, I didn’t even really sand them either. Here is a picture of my ribbon shelf in it’s full glory. I used blue painter’s tape to keep the ribbon from unraveling. LOVE THIS SHELF!!

God Bless This House

015
The BEFORE picture.

Go ahead and click on the picture to zoom in…you know you want to.  ;)

019

I picked up this piece of wood with this painted welcome sign on it at a garage sale today for $1.00!  I painted it black (and while I had the paint can out, I decided to paint over the yellow on this shelf.)  I have had this shelf since high school!  I’ve painted it so many times, I can’t even count them.  The yellow went with my previous office.  It was purple and yellow.  I know, a bit much, but those were the colors of our business.  Everything was purple and yellow. I wanted people to see those colors and think of us.

026

Okay, getting back to this little piece of wood.  First, I painted it with Behr, flat enamel.  Then, I used my medium grit sanding block and distressed it.

027 028

I used my new CRICUT and cut the words out of contact paper.  Yes, contact paper.  Then I “eyeballed” the letters on.  That was probably the hardest thing out of this whole project.

030

The letters were so white.  So I used my Ralph Lauren glaze to try and “age” it. It didn’t work on the letters, it just wiped right off.  They were so WHITE.  I didn’t know what to do, so I grabbed a can of black spray paint and “dusted” it. Eh, it’ll do for now.

032

Oh, and here is the “AFTER” of that old shelf.  I’m still not done with it.  I’m going to drill holes and add dowels through each shelf to hang my ribbon from in my craft room.  So, check back for that unveiling.  LOL

Kitchen Table Update

Here is the table.  It’s finally done. I decided not to seal it.  The Home Depot guys convinced me that the enamel paint will harden and be just fine.  If not, I have tons of paint left for later. :)  I sanded it to distress it a little.  I’m not super excited about it.  It will either grow on me, or I’ll get the brush out and paint over where I sanded it. Thanks for looking!

Kitchen Table

When we decided to move into this particular house, we started hunting on Craigslist for a kitchen table.  We would be using our current one in our new dining room.  I found this deal on Craigslist for $50!!!  Bargain.  Solid wood!  Had some cigarette burns on the table top and one of the chairs was missing a couple of dowels.  Easy fixes.  I envisioned painting this black and distressing it.  I haven’t painted the legs because I haven’t sanded them yet.  The tops of the chairs aren’t even painted completely yet, but this project sure has gone faster than I had originally thought.  We’ve had some great weather here in Nor-Cal.  I think it got up to 61 today.  Not bad for the end of January.

  • SAND
  • PAINT
  • SAND
  • PAINT

You get the picture.  Doesn’t the table look amazing so far?  Looks expensive.  =D  Considering sewing some sort of slip cover for the backs of the chairs.  Haven’t settled on anything yet.  Any suggestions?

SUPPLIES

  • 4 inch Foam Roller
  • Assorted sizes of Foam Brushes
  • Sandpaper (I used 100 grit to sand the stain and 220 grit in between paint.)
  • Behr paint in Disney Black
  • One drop cloth. (Unless your sister-in-law leaves hers at your house, then you can use that one.)  Boy do I owe my sis-in-law a lot of favors.  :D

Thanks for looking.
hugs,
Carolyn
